Hearts will welcome Glasgow Rangers in the Clydesdale Bank Scottish Premier League match at Tynecastle Stadium with the SPL champions’ boss Walter Smith hoping his side can extend their perfect start to the season. Smith is confident that the recent Champions League success experienced by Rangers can help boost the team’s belief.
“I think it can happen that you can take the higher level in the Champions League back in to the SPL and I would hope that’s what would happen.” Smith told the club’s official website. “I felt in the first three or four games we were slow to get going but that has got better and I’m hoping the involvement in the Champions League and the confidence from performing well there will help us continue in that vein.
“We have seen from the start of the season that there is not going to be much margin for error for us this year so it is important that we maintain the momentum. We have had to work hard for the results we have got and there have been good games and tight games along the way. So we know that we have to maintain that level because it seems we won’t be able to drop too many points this season.”
Smith is aware that the fixture programming will not be kind to Rangers with the Scottish champions having to travel away each time subsequently after each of their remaining Champions League games. The situation has been made all the much tougher due to the smaller squad and restrictions that face Smith but the successful Rangers boss is still confident his side will cope.
He added: “The fixture list means that we are away from home after five of our six Champions League games. It is difficult but we had a difficult away game at Aberdeen on Sunday and this one will be equally hard.
“It’s back to the bread and butter and we go to a place where we have had a lot of good games in recent seasons. We will have to work very hard if we are going to get a result there. The first half of the season is busy and there is hardly any respite if you have European football to play.
“We have a majority of players involved in international football as well so it’s a busy period for them all. The second half of the season, unless you have continued European football, is less busy. That will be a test for us this season especially with us having the smaller group of players. The thing for us with the small group is to avoid injuries and so far we haven’t been too badly affected by that.”
